Named after the mythical Titan condemned to hold up the heavens on his shoulders, the Atlas Coffee Table stands strong with its solid legs supporting a spacious tabletop. This 60×60 cm table embodies a design where the meeting and contrast between the legs and tabletop are central, each element exaggerating the other to create a distinct presence and a brutalist feel.

John Astbury, inspired by various influences in architectural history, has designed the Atlas Coffee Table with references to porticoes and colonnades, but mainly building on the archetypal post-and-lintel construction. The combination of simple geometrythe circle and the squaregives the table its unique character and composition.

John Astbury’s studio, founded in 2014 and based in Stockholm, Sweden, focuses on reducing objects to their fundamentals, exposing material, structure, and form. His work, characterized by a language of absolute simplicity, reveals the dialogues and symbols surrounding the object.

New Works presents collections at the intersection of old and new, light and dark, design and art. Their work pays homage to the strong Scandinavian history of craftsmanship and materiality while challenging contemporary forms. They collaborate with international designers and artisans who share a fascination with sculptural forms and honest materials, conveying a love for the sensual and the bold.

The Atlas Coffee Table, crafted in solid oak, is available in two finishes: an oiled natural version and an oiled dark fumed version, both emphasizing the material’s natural veins and paying tribute to its properties.
